HOW TO DO A PATCH TEST

Are you sometimes so eager to try a new product that you slather it onto your skin the moment it arrives? However, if you want to avoid red irritated skin and keep your complexion in check, it’s advisable you commence a patch test first.

The Facts // A patch test is not just for those who have sensitive skin. Just because you don’t think you have sensitive skin, or have never experienced a reaction, doesn't mean you're immune to certain ingredients. As you grow (let’s say wiser) you can develop allergies throughout different stages of your life, so it’s wise to keep an eye out for the main reaction culprits; redness, itching and swelling.

STEP 1.

Applying the product // Use a cotton swab to apply a small amount of product behind the ear. You can apply a different product behind each ear, just remember to make a note of what product was applied where.

STEP 2.

Wait for up to 48hrs // A patch test should be left on for 24 hours. If you have sensitive skin or are prone to reactions it is advisable to leave it on for 48 hours. Alternatively you can test the same area over several days.

STEP 3.

The Results // Assess the area and check for any changes such as, redness, itchiness, swelling or soreness. It is important to notice the differences between an allergic reaction and an irritation. If your suffer a reaction in any way stop use immediately, wash the area thoroughly and follow up with a basic moisturiser/topical cream that you've used in the past.

Allergic Reaction Vs. Irritant reaction

Allergic reaction // Itchiness, soreness, red bumps under the surface of the skin or areas of dryness or flaking (eczema). Please note. In severe cases, products may cause respiratory problems or nausea. In cases like this, stop using immediately, wash the area thoroughly and contact a medical advisor.

Irritant reaction // Redness, stinging or swelling. This may be an instant reaction and can be caused by the concentration of the ingredients used.

STEP 4.

How to Use // If your skin has not reacted to the patch test, you are safe to use the product as recommended.
